"Got nothing else to offer the world but my music" - Citizen Deep

How did the name Citizen Deep come about?

It took me a while, maybe two years to come up with the perfect stage name. I've always wanted to present music to the world and the first thing was to have a catchy stage name. I remember thinking of calling myself Chromatic, not liking it. Then I went to Deep C - with the C meaning Chromatic but it did not have a nice ring to it. I then changed the C to Citizen, I was sold. I started calling myself Deep Citizen and a friend was like "It works better as Citizen Deep" I was really sold.

What inspires your sound / tone in music?

The world, but mostly - music inspires my music.

Take us through the process of Citizen Deep making music?

The melodies pop up in my head a lot and that is where my phone's recorder comes in handy. I sing the melodies and record them on my phone and when I put it as a song in the studio, the music takes me there. The song has to play in my head first.

I read on one of your social media platforms about a presentation named A.R.C.A.D.E - tell us more about that?

I spoke too soon in accordance to A.R.C.A.D.E, I will reveal everything A.R.C.A.D.E in due time, a project is in the pipeline. I've featured Berita on the song and instead of dropping ARCADE I'll be dropping an EP on the first quarter of 2019. A.R.C.A.D.E is still under construction and will be presented later in 2019.

What's the story on INVADERS OF AFRIKA?

Invaders of Afrika and Audio Jazz Entertainment was my first home. I got mad love for the gents but it just wasn't meant to be . We had our differences and we decided to go our separate ways. We are cool though and will always be bros.

You seem like a chilled out guy but looks can be deceiving. Tell us more about Citizen Deep apart from the music?

Apart from the music i'm just a regular guy who loves to laugh. I love to read motivational and leadership books. I grew up with low self-esteem but I have spark of insanity at times.

In terms of the house music industry, with new sub-genres like Gqom and AmaPiano on the rise, how do you see the game progressing going foward?

I would rather speak fo SA music as a whole. As small as our counrty is, we are cultured and we have found a winning formula of expressing that through music. There's so much diversity and originality in our sound and the world is looking at us. The future is bright for South African Music. We just need to stop looking at each other as rivals and push together

You are also the founder of CITIZEN DEEP MUSIC - tell us more about the company and your roster?

Citizen Deep Music will be properly pushed soon, I have no one signed yet but I'm busy with the groundwork. As much as it is a label, I want it to make business sense. So nothing from C D M will be surfacing anytime soon. I promise all in due time an empire will be built. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Before the drop of your EP, you did not release anything for something like two years. Why was this?

This is a good question. I just didn't want to release music with no plan as to how I was going to push it and make it stick. I also lost myself after leaving Invaders of Afrika so we can say I took time to find myself. Those two factors are the reason.

"we are cultured and we have found a winning formula of expressing that through music"

And the release of Craving EP, why the title and the full story behind it and how has it been recieved?

It's actually just one song #Craving. It is a song about a woman who is waiting to be asked out by a man she likes so much. We had planned to release it as a single track but the Dub Mix was made and we felt like sharing the entire project because Craving is such a heavy and beautifully written song, thanks to Berita for her touch. The Dub Mix is recieved well at clubs and I cannot wait to share the 5 track EP with the world. The EP is titled IMAGE.
